Formula feeding: how to feed your baby safely

NHS Health Scotland has recently published 'Formula feeding: how to feed your baby safely'. The content of this resource has been approved by UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative and the NHS Scotland Central Legal Office to ensure compliance with the 'Infant Formula and Follow-on Formula (Scotland) Regulations 2007' and so should not be routinely given to women during the antenatal period.

This resource aims to provide the most up-to-date information on safe preparation and storage of formula milk. It also contains information on the most appropriate formula for all babies, feeding positioning, and growth, with a quick reference guide included.

The most important change to advice is that formula feeds should be made up one at a time and should not be stored unless absolutely necessary. This information will also be included in the revised ‘Nutritional guidance for early years’ and ‘Adventures in foodland’, due for publication in mid 2012.
