Healthy Start

Healthy Start is a UK wide initiative whereby pregnant mothers under the age of 18 or on benefits are eligible for a scheme, which offers them free milk, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, infant formula milk and vitamins.

Healthy Start, which replaced the Welfare Food Scheme (WFS) helps health professionals identify pregnant women and families who may need extra help and support to breastfeed and lead a healthier lifestyle bringing health benefits in Scotland. The scheme, which began to be rolled out across Scotland and the rest of Great Britain at the end of November 2006, is open to pregnant women under 18 or on income support, jobseekers' allowance or child tax credit.

The women and any children aged between one and four will receive one voucher a week, for each child/pregnancy. Babies under one year old will receive two vouchers. The vouchers can be exchanged for any combination of milk, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and infant formula milk in registered shops.
