Identification and prevention of dietary and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infant

The IDEFICS Study is an intervention study designed to identify factors which have a negative influence on child health in Europe. Part 7 of the programme has three elements: food choice and consumer behaviour, sensory perception and food preferences and finally environmental determinants of food choice and physical activity.

The IDEFICS Study started in September 2006 and is expected to run for five years under the coordination of the Bremen Institute for Prevention Research and Social Medicine, at the University of Bremen.  Twelve countries through out Europe including the UK are particpating in this study.

The study’s aim is to deliver reliable data to make an international assessment of the problem of childhood obesity by exploring the risks for overweight and obesity in children as well as associated long-term consequences. In addition, the EU-wide study will measure how far sensory perception and preferences of children influence the development of overweight.
