The charity was the first to pioneer organic standards for food in 1967 and in 1973 established a certificate system that provides independent tracking of food from field to fork. Its ultimate objective is to achieve 100% organic food by 2050.
The Scotland office was set up in 2002 and has a number of programmes of work:
- The Climate Change Programme is a three-year skills development programme that prepares farmers and growers for climate change.
- Food for Life aims to transform food on the public plate so it is cooked from fresh, local and organic ingredients. In Scotland Food for Life works to improve food education as well as school meals with the main focus being the promotion of the Food for Life Catering mark which rewards caterers (public and private) who meet Food for Life standards. This work is distinct from the English-based Food for Life Partnership.
- The Supply Chain Development Programme is a three-year project that helps caterers to develop sustainable menus and suppliers to access new markets.
- Crofting Connections is a landmark educational project working with schools and communities across the Highlands and Islands. It engages young people in crofting communities to explore their crofting heritage with an emphasis on food, on growing and on the land.
- In addition the Soil Association Scotland is involved in policy work in three main areas – the National Food and Drink Policy for Scotland, the Organic Action Plan and the Scottish Rural Development Plan.
