Survey of sugar intake among children in Scotland (S14029)

This project was commissioned by FSAS to monitor progress towards the Scottish Dietary Target to reduce sugar intakes in children living in Scotland.

Prior to this survey no data was available on the sugar in intake of children in Scotland. This study provided evidence that the % energy from added sugar in the diet is nearly twice what it should be and at least as high, if not higher, than UK levels. The report has been used by SG in relation to its Childsmile Initiative, providing evidence for the link between intake of added sugars and dental decay in Scottish children, and to produce advice on the main sources of added sugar in the diet.  Results have been disseminated widely at conferences and in peer reviewed journals.
