Healthy Weight
Obesity is a major cause of disease and death in the Scottish population. It is a serious public health concern in Scotland as the prevalence rises.
It results from a persistent imbalance in energy intake compared to energy expenditure. Diet and physical inactivity are important factors in this, which are themselves the result of many individual, environmental and social factors.
Obesity and being overweight can shorten life expectancy and substantially increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, some cancers, gall bladder disease and other conditions.
Within the healthy weight section you can find out more information on the specific policy, current evidence including information concerning existing intervention programmes and other useful sources of information.
